Spring Valley High School Model UN made history on Saturday, February 22nd by hosting the first high school Model UN conference in Southern Nevada.

Nine high schools and a grand total of 180 students representing 70 different UN member nations in four committees met on the campus of Spring Valley High School for a full day of debate, resolution writing, diplomacy, and academic competition.

Twelve of Spring Valley varsity Model UN students and their two advisors worked for six months to plan, prepare, and manage the conference.  Despite the fact that Model UN is a new phenomenon in Southern Nevada, Palo Verde High School, Silverado High School, Southwest Career & Technical Academy, Advanced Technologies Academy, CSN High School, and Liberty High School each formed groups of excited and well-prepared students to participate.

Faith Lutheran High School, Wasatch Academy (coming all the way from Utah), and Spring Valley's novice and intermediate Model UN group also competed at the event.

At the day's closing ceremonies, after committee chairs awarded special recognition to 32 individual delegates, Secretary General Tyler Teresi announced the three "Best Delegation" awards which went to Silverado High School, Faith Lutheran High School MUN, and Spring Valley High School.

Conference organizers were delighted with the success of LVMUN I and look forward to planning next year's event.

Now in its 13th year, the Paris Model United Nations conference boasted 900 students from 62 high schools representing nearly every continent in the world for a three-day academic simulation of the real United Nations.

This year was the third visit for Spring Valley, one of only two US schools to participate at the conference this year, representing the countries of China and Kenya in nine different committees, from the General Assembly to the Security Council.

Prior to the conference, seniors Samantha Wolk and Virginia Gallagher were accepted as conference officers; Wolk was selected as Vice President of the International Court of Justice and Gallagher held the position of Press Officer.

The 15 Spring Valley High School students made to trip to France one week in advance to participate in an exchange program with their sister high school, Lycee Jean Jaures in the city of Reims, whose students also participate at the Paris Model UN conference.

Congratulations to our students who were a credit to our school, city, state, and nation!
